Letter 'L' after the letter codes denotes a long shaft model.

Letter 'R' after the letter codes denotes a Factory Refurbishment. Thanks John (again!)

Letter 'E' Means Electronic Ignition, Letter 'T' Means twist grip throttle, 'G' in a code signifies that the engine has a Bing Carborettor.

From 1963 to 1979 a letter and number was used to denote manufacturing date. 1963 to 1972 a single letter was used for the month e.g. A=Jan, B=Feb and M=Dec (they didn't use 'L'). A number was added to denote the year 3=1963 7=1967. so for example B4 would mean made in Feburary 1964.

From 1973 two letters were used for the month. So for example CC5 would mean March 1975. This can get very confusing and should be used with the dates above.

Even more confusingly, From 1983 the code sequence returned to a single letter and then in 1993 it returned to a double letter !

Codes in this colour are QB series engines, these are more recent engines with quite a few differences from the classic seagulls

Working out what your seagull is exactly is a difficult and confusing process. Quite often in fact seagulls come to me for a repair or a service and they are made from 3 different engines !
